Congratulations to Devonport Cricket Club, your 2017/18 Tasfreight 2nd Grade Premiers!
After an inspection at 10.30 am, both umpires and captains agreed that no play would be possible on Day 2 due to the wet run-ups and surrounds, along with the forecast rain throughout the day.
Devonport were crowned premiers after they finished the roster series on top of the ladder. The Burnie Hurricanes are to be congratulated on their season, in which they qualified for both the Sportspower Burnie T20 and Tasfreight Two-Day Grand Finals.
Unfortunately wet weather impacted on both the Semi-Finals and Grand Final, and Devonport won the premiership without having to bowl or face a ball in the finals series. It is not the way they wanted to win a premiership, but they earned that luxury after a consistent season saw them finish on top of the table.
The Orions secured back-to-back premierships, and a record 21st premiership in this grade, more than double the number of any other club.
Congratulations are also in order for our match umpires Barney Miller and Mark Smith, who were appointed to their second consecutive Tasfreight 2nd Grade Grand Final.
We would also like to thank Kerry Gibson and Tasfreight for their ongoing support of this competition, Brock Bucknell, Devonport City Council and Devonport Cricket Club for their support of this weekend's Grand Final.
Finally, thanks to all clubs, players, officials and volunteers for their efforts throughout the Tasfreight 2nd Grade season. We hope to see you back in 2018/19!
