Congratulations to the Burnie Hurricanes, winners of the inaugural Female Pre-Season Gala Day, held at Maidstone Park on Sunday.
The Hurricanes met Sheffield in the Grand Final after a thrilling final-ball win over Ulverstone granted them top spot in Pool B. Sheffield finished on top of Pool A after scoring wins over Devonport and Wynyard.
Sheffield batted first in the decider and finished on 8/43 from its 16 overs. Georgia Anderson (9) and Georgia Foote (6) were the leading scorers for the Mountainettes, while the Hurricanes bowling was led by Bridget Watling (1-4 off 3 overs) and Suzie Gale (1-8 off 3 overs). The Hurricanes fielding proved to be decisive, with the team executing three run outs to stall Sheffield's momentum.
The Hurricanes made short work of the reply, cruising to 2/44 from 9.3 overs. April Brown (12 no), Suzie Gale (11 no) and Montana Bradley (11) led the batting effort, while Sheffield's best bowlers were Georgia Anderson (1-12) and Melissa Longcake (1-12).
Well done to the Hurricanes on claiming their first piece of silverware in senior female cricket, building on last year's Girls Under-17 premiership. Congratulations also go to Sheffield, who have now played in two female competitions and made two Grand Finals! The Mountainettes certainly look ready to go for their first season in the Senior Female Competition.
